Introduction
Decentering the Canon is an anthology of music excerpts co-authored by music theory students at Wellesley College.
This anthology includes a collection of annotated excerpts sourced from outside the standard tonal repertory that showcase a range of topics and concepts in music theory. Each excerpt is accompanied by contextual information and analytical commentary designed to draw attention to aspects of the music that may be useful for learning and teaching tonal theory. The excerpts include music by lesser-known classical composers--especially woman and people of color--as well as music outside of the classical tradition, including hip hop, blues, spirituals, R&B, musical theatre, pop, rock, and film music.
